Relay for Life of La Porte County

The Relay for Life of La Porte County will be on June 29 starting at 10 a.m. thru June 30 at 6 a.m. at the La Porte County Fairgrounds. It’s open to the public and it’s free admittance. There’ll be free entertainment, silent and live chair auctions, food, wares and games. Relay For Life is a community-based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Annual United Way Golf Outing August 12

The 15th annual United Way of La Porte County Golf Outing will be Aug. 12 at Pottawattomie Country Club in Michigan City. Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon, and a prime rib dinner and awards at 5 p.m. Cost is $900 for a foursome, which includes golf, cart, lunch, prime rib dinner, exciting games and exclusive prizes, awards and trophies, complimentary water and soft drinks, epic beverage and food sampling booths, hole-in-one shots: win new cars from Sauers GMC/Buick. Area hoops players in Underclass Showcase events

Some area boys and girls basketball players were named to participate in IBCA/IHSAA Underclass Showcase events.

La Porte’s Garrott Ott-Large was selected to the 2019 Boys’ Showcase, which will be today at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. Activity will begin at 1 p.m. CDT and will last until about 6:45 p.m. CDT. This is during the NCAA's new "scholastic viewing period" in June this year after being in July in previous years. La Porte’s Ryin Ott and Michigan City’s Trinity Thompson were chosen to the 2019 Girls’ Showcase, which will be on July 15 at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. Action will begin at 1 p.m. CDT and last until about 6:45 p.m. CDT.

Staged by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association with support from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, the Underclass Showcase events are designed to give exposure to approximately 240 of the top basketball prospects (120 boys and 117 girls) from across the state to colleges across the state and nation. The showcase events are open to the public. Admission is $5 per person per day. IBCA-member coaches will be admitted at no charge by showing their IBCA membership card.

McLain to appear in Three Oaks

The Biggest Little Baseball Museum and the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Mich., will host Denny McLain, baseball’s last 30-game winner, today. The former Detroit Tiger, who won the American League MVP and Cy Young awards in 1968, when he went 31-6, will conduct an autograph session at the museum, located at 3 N. Elm St., from 9-11 a.m. At 11:30, he will appear on stage at the nearby Acorn Theater, where he will reminisce with fans about his teammates and the ‘68 world championship season. The presentation will be followed by another autograph session in the theater lobby. The $10 theater admission price includes a hot dog, unlimited soft drinks, and a box of Cracker Jack. There will also be a cash bar. Tickets are available on the Acorn website at www.acornlive.org.
