J&D Brokerage topped Winn Machine 5-4 to claim the La Porte Little "L" League 42nd annual Walt Thode baseball tournament Saturday night at Lions Field.
In the first inning, J&D’s Conner Meyers singled and scored on Lucas DelRio’s RBI single. RJ Carnes then smashed a double down the left-field line to make it 2-0.
Winn Machine came right back in the second as Nolan Eaton hit an RBI single. In the bottom half, J&D put runners on first and third base with one out, but Winn’s Evan Sittig struck out Josh Westfall, and Sittig teamed up with catcher Nathan Singleton to cut down a runner trying to score on a passed ball to end the inning.
In the third, J&D pounced quickly as Harlan Gomez and Grant Uhlemann both had RBI singles, pushing the lead to 4-2. Winn cut the margin to one run an inning later as Brock Stewart walked and scored on a passed ball, but Meyers struck out the side. Ethan Schoof matched Meyers with three strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth.
In the next frame, Sittig singled and later touched home, tying the game 4-4. Meyers again struck out the side to end another Winn threat. In the bottom of the fifth, J&D's Isaac Moyer got hit by a pitch and Jordan Cygan sacrificed him to third. Moyer scored on a passed ball with what proved to be the winning run, but not before Winn threatened in the sixth. Issac Pitman and Singleton reached base after one out, only to be stranded as Meyers again struck out the side.
Sittig and Schoof combined for nine strikeouts, including seven by Schoof, as they walked two and allowed seven hits. Sittig and Pitman each singled twice for Winn. Westfall, Vincent Balich and Meyers amassed 16 strikeouts against three walks and seven hits. Westfall fanned five and Meyers whiffed nine.
Nolan Weeks, grandson of John Weeks, presented J&D’s Conner Meyers with the John R. Weeks MVP, chosen based on a coaches' vote.
