Evan Michael Hughes, 64, of Paw Paw, Michigan, died on Feb. 4, 2019 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Evan was born Sept. 13, 1954, in Coshocton, Ohio, the son of the Reverend Canon John Charles and Laverne Jean Hughes. The family moved to Long Beach, Indiana in 1960 where his father became the priest at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Evan attended Long Beach School, was active in the Boy Scouts, and was an acolyte at church.
In 1972 Evan graduated from Elston High School in Michigan City, Indiana and went on to attend Kalamazoo College where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History (1976). During his time in Kalamazoo College Evan studied abroad in the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. His time there had a deep impact on his life in both his interest in the Middle East and his work with refugees later on in life in Kalamazoo. He worked many years at the Eaton Corporation as a Global Marketing Strategy and Sales Manager. Later on during his professional career he worked at the Social Security and Disability Office. He was deeply involved in the Paw Paw community. He served as an AYSO coach for many years, sharing his love of soccer with others. For the last twenty years Evan served as “THE voice” of Paw Paw High School soccer. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where his vocal talents were featured as both a reader and in the choir.
Surviving are his mother, Laverne Hughes; his wife of thirty nine years, Kathleen Jean Hughes; his son Dr. Jonathan (Dr. Marian) Hughes; daughters Kathryn Hughes and Rebecca Hughes; sister Susan (Robert) Wright; nephews Adam (Victoria) Wright and Brian (Christina) Wright, and his beloved cat Pebbles.
Evan was preceded in death by his father, John Hughes.
Funeral will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 412 Cedar St., Paw Paw, Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 16 with Rev. Rebecca Crise officiating. Visitation will take place at St. Mark’s starting at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral taking place at 11 a.m. EST. A lunch will be served following the service.
On Saturday, Feb. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. CST, there will be a gathering to celebrate Evan’s life at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 14280 Red Arrow Highway, Harbert, Michigan. It will be a sharing of stories about Evan in an informal setting and is aimed at supporting those who loved him.
