Woman: 'Attacked with car, brick'

Shaundray Fowler

MICHIGAN CITY – A South Bend woman intentionally struck a Michigan CIty woman with her car, then tried to hit her and her son with a brick in a dispute that started on social media, according to police.

Shaundray Fowler, 27, is charged with felony counts of aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon and battery to a person under 14, according to the La Porte County Sheriff's Department.

About 5 p.m. Thursday, Michigan City Police responded to a 911 call from the victim's son that a woman had driven into their yard and was trying to hit his mother with a car, according to a police report. The caller said the woman in the car then got out and was trying to hit his mom with a brick.

Police arrived to find a black Chevrolet Malibu parked in the yard and running, with a woman inside. Another woman with a bloodied face approached and said the driver had struck her with the car, then tried to run her over, the report said.

The driver was talking on the phone and refused to get out of the car until an officer opened the door and grabbed her arm. She then complied and was handcuffed, police said.

The victim, a 31-year-old Michigan City resident, said the driver, identified as Fowler, came to her house, sat in the car, honked the horn several times times, and said she wanted to fight her.

Fowler then drove away, but returned about 20 minutes later and started honking again, the woman told police. When the victim went outside, Fowler drove into the yard in an effort to hit her, going back and forth until striking the victim, who ended up on the hood of the car, according to the report.

She told police Fowler then got out of the car and they began to fight, with the victim punching her attacker in the face, the report said. But Fowler eventually knocked her to the ground, got on top of her, grabbed a landscaping brick and tried to hit her.

The victim's 11-year-old son came outside and began to hit Fowler in the back with metal grill prongs to get her off his mom, he told police. But Fowler grabbed a solar garden spike, threw the top at him, then took the plastic spike and tried to stab him, the report said.

A neighbor then came into the yard and broke up the fight by pulling Fowler off the victim, he told police. She then asked for help getting her car unstuck from a pole it had struck, the report said.

Both the victim and Fowler were taken to Franciscan Health - Michigan City, where Fowler agreed to speak with officers, the report said.

She claimed she was driving to her sister's home and the victim followed her in another vehicle, pulled up beside her and threw a cup of juice in her face, the report said.

She then went to the victim's home to "talk about the incident" and some "Facebook drama" about the father of Fowler's child, the report said. She said when she got there, the victim came out with a fireplace poker, struck and kicked her car, and broke the window with a set of keys.

She said she drove into the yard to get away, but the car got stuck and they began to fight, before the victim's son came out and began hitting her with a metal pole. She said she was the one who got hit with the brick, and she never attacked the boy, the report said.

Fowler suffered a broken nose in the incident, police said. The extent of the victim's injuries was not known.

Fowler remains in the La Porte County on a $25,000 cash-only bond. Her next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Superior Court 1.
