La PORTE — The La Porte First United Methodist Church Mission’s Committee is sponsoring a trip to Red Bird Mission in the Appalachian Mountains in Beverly, Kentucky.

Red Bird Mission has provided assistance to the poor in the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing and rugged mountainous terrain are many of the obstacles that face the residents of this rural area.

The mission is planed for March 31 through April 6.

Some of the jobs the 20-member mission team may tackle are: Roofing, siding, painting, flooring, bathroom and kitchen remodeling, outdoor deck construction and wheelchair ramps.

First United Methodist is sponsoring a trivia night and silent auction fundraiser on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. to help with construction costs and team travel expenses.

Businesses interested in supporting the mission with donations of gift certificates to the trivia night and silent auction are asked to contact Rip Ludlow at (219) 608-9750 or rludlow58@yahoo.com

The church is also auctioning a quilt made in honor of Lois Bell. Those interested in bidding on the quilt are asked to call the church office at 362-2443. The closing date for the final bid is Sunday at the trivia night event.

For more information, contact Pastor Bob Vale at 362-2443 or bobvale1961@gmail.com
