La PORTE – La Porte has a new 24-hour radio station, and it sounds quite different than the sister station it shares facilities with.

ROCK 106.5 signed on the air Wednesday as a classic rock station, something the station's owners said was needed for the local market.

Spoon River Media, which purchased La Porte-based WLOI and WCOE in August, conducted "extensive research that pointed to a music format based on classic rock as the clear need in the area," according to Matt Moore, co-owner of the company.

‘’There was no other clear format that anybody in the area really wanted outside of classic rock, but they didn’t want just classic rock. They wanted classic rock that also played a little bit of '90s and 2000s. We’re delivering,’’ Moore said.

So what can listeners expect?

"Alternative rock from the '90s to the Doors and Led Zeppelin, and your classics that you normally have," Moore said. "You’ll also hear a little Metallica on here as well."

ROCK 106.5 FM went on at 1 p.m. Wednesday with an appropriate selection – the 1981 Rolling Stones' hit "Start Me Up."

The nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show, produced out of Indianapolis since the early 1980s will run on the new ROCK 106.5 on Monday through Saturday from 5-9 a.m.

The addition of ROCK 106.5 stems from an FCC ruling allowing AM stations to broadcast on FM frequencies due to changes in the radio industry, Moore said.

ROCK 106.5 will also feature local news starting at six minutes before the top of each hour during the Bob & Tom Show.

The new FM station will be simulcast on WLOI at 1540 AM, and can also be streamed at

Sister station, 96.7 The Eagle, established in 1964, will continue with its "familiar country music format and 'Morning Mayhem' show, hosted live by station general manager Dennis Siddall and Jo Eberhart," Moore said.

Local news will continue airing on WCOE at the top of each hour from 5-9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m.
