LAKE STATION – A La Porte man was killed early Friday when his car, which was driving the wrong way on the Indiana Toll Road, collided with a semi near Lake Station.
Indiana State Police were notified about 4:45 a.m. of a car going the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of I-80/90 near the 17.5 mile marker, about three-and-a-half miles west of the Lake Station exit.
Witnesses said a black 2019 Toyota Avalon was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes before the crash, according to ISP. A semi travelling in the right lane was able to swerve to the left and avoid the Toyota.
However, the Toyota then collided with a white 2012 Freightliner driven by Ernest Sasak, 60 of Tustin, Michigan. The left side of the Toyota collided with the front right of the Freightliner as both vehicles moved toward the center lane, according to ISP.
The Toyota continued across the eastbound lanes and collided with the center barrier wall before coming to a stop.
The driver, 50-year-old Kevin Galloway of La Porte, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The center and left lanes of the Toll Road were closed for about five hours for crash reconstruction and removal of the vehicles, and reopened about 9:45 a.m., ISP said.
The investigation is ongoing, and autopsy and toxicology results are pending.
ISP was assisted at the scene by the Lake County Coroner's office, Gary Fire Department and EMS, and Gary Police Department.
