La PORTE — A La Porte County resident is offering financial advice in the form of a book.

Dee Mosier recently wrote a financial book called "Financial Straight Talk," in which she aims to separate confusion caused by complicated jargon, and to give readers the basics they need on their road to retirement.

"What is challenging is to help people understand these terms in the way we talk everyday, and I think that's what I feel best about in this book," said Mosier. "It's so easy to understand."

Mosier said the vast majority of people pre-retirment do not feel they have enough to retire on, and the earlier a person begins investing, the more time the better off they will be.

"In the very first chapter, that's what I say, start early," said Mosier. "You don't have to have large amounts, but you have to be very methodical."

Mosier's book walks readers through the importance of mutual funds and financial planning by focusing on diversification, risk tolerance, time horizon, style boxes, global investing, asset allocation and life's events.

"In every chapter, there are exercises for you to do," said Mosier. "So you see if you really got the point of the chapter."

Mosier spent most of her adult career — 30 years — in the investment world. Twenty-five years were spent owning her own investment firm, as one of the few female brokers in the U.S.

She has also interviewed leading U.S. investors, businessmen and government leaders, as well as producing television shows and online videos concerning financial topics.

Other than these experiences, the classes she taught at Columbia College in Chicago also made her consider writing a book geared toward the common individual.

"It's not that I have all that much more wisdom than anybody else," said Mosier. "I just wanted to write a book that was easy to understand."

Mosier said she enjoyed writing the book and included illustrations to keep readers focused. She also said the responses she has received through phone calls and blog posts have made the work worth the effort.

"It makes my day when people tell me they understand things for the first time," said Mosier.

She will hold a book signing at The Vintage Rose on Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
