Candidate wants to keep his party on the ballot

LA PORTE — Libertarian Secretary of State candidate Mike Wherry’s main goal for this year’s election is keeping his party on the ballot.

Wherry was recently in La Porte to attend a Liberty Straight Up event at Rother’s Pub in the Best Western.

He said the Libertarian Party, or any party, needs to secure two percent of the vote in the secretary of state election each year if it wants its party candidates on the ballot for the next four year cycle of local, state and national elections.

If the Libertarian Party were to fail to do this, it would need to get a petition signed by 2 percent of all voters in the previous year’s election (about 35,000) to place its candidates on the ballot.

He said the state used to require only a .5 percent share of the vote, a much easier number for third party candidates to reach, and one he wished the state would return to.

He was against the 2 percent policy because it limited voter choices.

“It’s all about who the voters want,” he said. “If people like the Green Party, they should be able to vote for that party. They shouldn’t be forced to vote for an alternative.”

Wherry, 42, of Greenville, and formally of Porter, said he only recently got involved in politics after the government bailouts.

“This is my introduction into politics,” he said. “I’m a former Republican who was disillusioned in the situation of government spending. Then I found the Libertarians.”

Once a party is successful in the secretary of state race, he said, it can slate candidates from the local level up through federal office without gathering petition signatures for each race.

But Wherry’s platform included more than the obtainment of a 2 percent vote.

He was against over regulating businesses, except in areas of safety, because it put a burden on small businesses. He said regulations were easier for larger corporations to absorb because they often had the staff on hand to take care of them while smaller businesses would have to hire them.

He also wanted state legislation allowing voters to recall elected officials.

Libertarians have been on the ballot straight since 1994 in Indiana.
